Despite the pandemic interfering with original fashion week plans, Chanel remains true to its brand. There is nothing that can match the excitement of a yearly défilé for a famous house with epic show experiences: the ceremony bringing together the industry, the sacred runway with its prophetic aura, and its rich history. In her show notes, Virginie Viard recalled, "I used to enjoy the sound of flashbulbs going off during the shows in the '80s when the models were on a higher runway." "I wanted to relive that feeling.". In order to channel that energy and joy, Viard designed a collection that not only referenced the era through the clothing, staging, and accessories (purses like N°5 bottles; piratically flared Louis heels), but also through the soundtrack. Watch George Michael's anthemic "Freedom!" '90”—covered by Christine and the Queens—gets the models in the party mood .

A variety of colour elements are included in the collection, from black and gold bathing suits to tweed skirts in pink and mauve, multicolour crochets as ornamentation, and colourful patterns, all set against black and white backgrounds. There are large chains on quilted purses, pirate-like buckles on Mary-Janes and sandals, and flared heels. "I'm always searching for something romantic," Viard says. "There's a tinge of mystery here."

The live design pays homage to the aesthetic of the World's Fair and used it as a framework for the launch design, "where I felt very free," adds Virginie Viard, "the geometric shapes allowed me to conceive designs that were contrasting and overflowing with lightness and freshness: ethereal, flowing dresses that seemed to The collection is also full of ruffles, tassels, McLame hand-knots, bright lace, gorgeous tweed, and colourful jewelled buttons." Additionally, also included in the collection were pink tweed jackets with white stripes, white woven shoulder straps embroidered with beads or silver chains, two-tone Mary Jane trip shoes that were innovative interpretations of 1920s heel designs in 1980s fashion, and delicate geometric embroidery that mirrored the live designs.
