The Met Gala is well recognised for its eye-catching themes, which dictate the attire of famous celebrities. Previous Met Gala themes have included "camp," a celebration of corny and over-the-top fashion, and "heavenly bodies," an examination of mediaeval art and holy influences in design.

The Met Gala has returned, and this year's theme is the Gilded Age.

The Gilded Age is a word used to describe a time period in the late 1800s that is widely thought to have lasted from the 1870s to the early 1900s. It is the period of American history following the Civil War and preceding World War I.

This theme inspired some incredible fashion moments, including Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe's most famous gown, Blake Lively being unwrapped to reveal her second dress on the Met steps, and several stars nodding to the past with sequins, tulle, and corsets, as well as some seriously dramatic headpieces.

Below, we round up our 10 favourite looks from the 2022 Met Gala. For every single outfit from the red carpet, head this way.

1. Kim Kardashian in vintage Jean-Louis

Kim Kardashian quickly became the star of the Met Gala red carpet. Following last year's headline-making Balenciaga moment and 2019's custom-made Mugler appearance, the reality star made headlines in 2022 for a very different cause, donning the classic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to sing "Happy Birthday, Mr President" to John F Kennedy in 1962. The gown was initially designed by Jean-Louis – and Kardashian had to drop weight in order to fit into the gown (which could not be altered), while also dying her hair Monroe's famed platinum blonde to fully commit to the image. Once inside, Kardashian changed into a duplicate gown in order to avoid tarnishing the legendary piece of fashion history.

2. Dakota Johnson in Gucci

Dakota Johnson was positioned between creative director Alessandro Michele and actor Jared Leto, who were twinning in perfectly matching floral-embroidered suits in ivory silk, as the Gucci contingent arrived on the red carpet together. Despite that, the actress shone out in a black sheer-lace bodysuit adorned all over with metal beaded fringe, coupled with a velvet draped cloak enhanced with crystal fringe. Messika's high-jewellery collaboration with Kate Moss earrings and ring in diamond fringe complemented the look.

3. Blake Lively in Versace

The Met Gala is designed for outrageous fashion moments, which Blake Lively certainly embraced on Monday evening, arriving in one gown that was immediately unwrapped on the Met's steps to show another underneath. Inspired by the architecture of New York City, the blue highlights paid homage to the Statue of Liberty, while the gold design represented the Empire State Building.

4. Emma Chamberlain in Louis Vuitton and Cartier

It’s giving “Victorian royalty meets L.A. heiress,” and we couldn’t possibly love it more. Emma Chamberlain's stylist deserves credit for grasping the idea and working within it to produce such unique outcomes.

5. Simone Ashley in Moschino and De Beers jewellery

The crop top is hot in 2022, but it takes considerable expertise to pull it off in an elevated way. Simone Ashley has accomplished all of this and more with her bronze bustier. Ashley fits among the top magazine cover models when she wears the bodice with her expertly styled damp waves and a hip-hugging satin skirt.

6. Janelle Monáe in Ralph Lauren

We predicted that tonight's "Gilded Glamour" theme would draw a lot of crystal embellishments, but this gleaming number on Janelle Monáe is even better. From a distance, it may not appear to be very fascinating, but zoom in to see the captivating way the light hits the fabric. Plus points for Monae's puckered red lips and her beautiful headpiece.

7. Gemma Chan in Louis Vuitton

Gemma Chan always knows how to work the red carpet – and for this year's Met Gala, the British star's custom Louis Vuitton gown, complete with sequins and a dramatic bustle skirt, was ideal.

8. Cardi B in Atelier Versace

Cardi's Met Gala dress was equally stunning. Her elaborate Atelier Versace column gown was a blingy, high-voltage twist on Gilded Age fashion. The gown was made of tulle and seven different types of heavy gold chains, some of which were embellished with Versace's iconic Medusa head pendants. According to the house, a kilometre of golden metal chains were utilised for the complete pattern, which was ruched in all the appropriate spots.

9. Carey Mulligan in Schiaparelli

Carey Mulligan was the winner of the golden glamour award. Schiaparelli's unique design, which consisted of a pretty modest black column dress with the most stunning embroidery, took more than 4,000 hours to complete. The dress and train were embellished with 79,000 gold sequins and 38,000 crystals, according to the house.

10. Gigi Hadid in Versace

Gigi Hadid, who made quite an entrance in the custom Versace look, wore another combination that was all about volume. The supermodel wore a burgundy latex catsuit with a massive, floor-length puffer coat.
